Mechanism of glycocalyx degradation in LPS or septic conditions. Inflammatory factors mediate the expression of MMPs to induce glycocalyx degradation. TNF-α acts on ECs to express protease or nucleotide enzyme, inducing glycocalyx degradation. Neutrophil proteinases released by neutrophils act on glycocalyx, directly causing its degradation. Glycocalyx degradation exposes adhesion factors on the surface of ECs that induce adhesion and interaction of platelets and leukocytes on the surface of ECs
