Panels: A) Internalization of C. jejuni in HeLa cells transfected with caveolin-1 (Cav-1) or scrambled (Scr) siRNA. Also shown is the number of bacteria internalized in HeLa cells transfected with caveolin-1 siRNA and treated with 5 mM of methyl-β-cyclodextrin (MβCD). The values represent the mean number of internalized bacteria ± standard deviation. The asterisks indicate significance between untreated and treated samples (P < 0.05), as determined using Student’s t test. B) Whole cell lysates of untreated (vehicle only), caveolin-1 siRNA transfected, and Scr siRNA transfected HeLa cells probed with an α caveolin-1 antibody. The blot was re-probed with an α actin antibody to confirm that equal amounts of protein were loaded into each well.
