Prx II is a promising target for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases induced by oxidative stress via mitochondrial membrane potential decrease. By regulating EMCSs, Prx II can prevent the accumulation of Ca2+ in the mitochondrial matrix, which can stimulate the formation and opening of the MPTP, leading to the release of Ca2+ and apoptotic factors into the cytoplasm, and the induction of cell death
