Liquid-ordered (L o ) raft phases of the exoplasmic leaflet of the plasma membrane lipid bilayer as modelled in artificial lipid membranes. Alignment of cholesterol with saturated PC species and SM drives the formation of densely packed liquid-ordered Lo raft membrane phases. The phases can coexist in model membranes with a less densely packed liquid-disordered (Ld) membrane phase which is formed by unsaturated phospholipids which do not align tightly with cholesterol.
