Phase contrast/fluorescence microscopy overlay of primary umbilical cord-derived hMSC (black arrow) and lentivirus vector GFP- transfected MDA-MB-231 human breast carcinoma cells (green cells) originally seeded in a ratio of 60:40 (MSC: MDA-MB-231) and co-cultured for 7d. A certain amount of spindle-shaped MSC surrounded the tumor cells (white arrow). However, as judged by the morphology, a small amount of these spindle-shaped cells appeared with green fluorescence (green arrows) which may indicate a possible fusion of MSC with GFP-containing exosomes or a complete MSC-breast cancer cell fusion with 2 nuclei (green arrows).
