Peter Benz is a research group leader at the Institute for Vascular Signalling of the Goethe University in Frankfurt/Main, Germany. He studied Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of Würzburg, Germany, and the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada. After receiving his PhD, Peter worked as a post-doc in the Institute for Cardiovascular Physiology in Würzburg and as an EMBO fellowship post-doc at the Weatherall Institute of Molecular Medicine, University of Oxford, UK. Since 2012, Peter is the leader of an ECCPS (Excellence Cluster ‘Cardio Pulmonary System’) junior group and a PI of the Collaborative Research Centre 834 ‘Endothelial Signaling and Vascular Repair’.
Peter’s interdisciplinary scientific work focuses on signal transduction and the regulation of actin dynamics in cardiovascular cells. Regulation of actin cytoskeletal turnover is vitally important to coordinate cell movement, cell-cell and cell-matrix adhesion, and cellular shape change. Proteins of the Enabled/vasodilator-stimulated phosphoprotein (Ena/VASP) family are important mediators in cytoskeleton control, linking cyclic nucleotide signaling pathways to different modes of actin organization including actin filament assembly, cross-linking, and bundling. The goal of Peter’s ongoing research is to identify novel interaction partners and physiological functions of Ena/VASP proteins with a focus on the cardiovascular system.
