Dr. Zahra Zakeri received her Ph.D. from St. John’s University and continued as a post-doctoral fellow and associate research scientist at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. She taught at the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School – University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey before moving to Queens College, where she is Professor of Biology and Director of the MARC Program. She has served on numerous grant review panels in the US, Ireland, Italy, Belgium, Israel and Iran. She is on the editorial boards of several journals and as a reviewer for many other journals. Her research has touched on many areas of cell death, including stress and heat shock genes, ceramide and sphingomyelin, autophagy and phagocytosis, cell death in development and aging, cyclin dependent kinases, the role of apoptosis in teratogenicity, viral manipulation in cell death, and the role of genetic sex on sensitivity to cell death. She has co-edited several books, including two volumes of Methods in Enzymology.
