Kalle Saksela is Professor and Chairman at the Department of Virology, Haartman Institute, University of Helsinki.
Kalle received his MD and PhD in 1989 from University of Helsinki. His PhD work in the laboratory of Kari Alitalo dealt with Myc oncoproteins. In 1991-1994 he was a postdoctoral fellow in in the laboratory of David Baltimore, first in the Whitehead Institute and later in the Rockefeller University, where his studies focused on the molecular pathogenesis of HIV infection.
In 1994 he was appointed as an Assisstant Professor in the Rockefeller University, and in 1996 moved back to Finland to become Professor in the newly established Institute for Medical Techology at the University of Tampere. In 2005 he was appointed to his current position in University of Helsinki.
Kalle’s research interests include diverse aspects of cell signaling, especially related to virus-host interactions and protein interactions mediated by SH3 domains. Viral non-structural proteins, such as HIV Nef, HCV NS5A, influenza A NS1, and alphaviral nsP3 have been among the key topics in these studies. Kalle is also interested in translational and biotechnology aspects of protein interactions, and is also studying miRNA biology as a means for engineering the replicative tropism of therapeutic and vaccine viruses.
